from here & there - A window to knowledge

Nagendra Ammunje, a textile businessman in Udupi, has a unique collection of postcards and postal covers of over 100 countries. What started as an interest in the childhood has now grown into a passion. His passion for postcards got momentum when he learnt about Postcrossing. This is a platform that allows a person to send postcards and receive them back (by real mail, not electronically) from random people across the world. Equipped with this new tool, now Nagendra’s goal is to collect at least five postcards from each and every stamp issuing organisation in the world.

His collection also includes stamps and aerogrammes. One of his prized possessions is a collection of postcards with images of world heritage sites. He has postcards that depict over 700 world heritage sites from across the globe. “Stamp and postcard collection also open a window to knowledge. Sitting at home, I have information about various places and cultures,” says the philatelist. What intrigues him most is getting postcards from lesser-known places. “It is not difficult to get postcards and stamps from known countries. But, what excites me is the possibility of getting a stamp from a remote country,” Nagendra says.

His collection has won him many national and international recognitions too. In 2013, he won a medal at the international philatelic exhibition on global warming organised in Brazil. Of late, he has extended his interest to numismatics too.
