Shambhu Shetty

Freedom fighter Shambhu Shetty passed away at his residence here on Friday. He was 93.
Shambhu Shetty, who joined the freedom movement when he was studying in seventh standard, had taken part in the freedom struggle of 1932 and also in the Quit India movement. He was jailed in Uttara Kannada as well as Belgaum.

A winner of a number of awards, Shambhu Shetty had also received a letter of appreciation from the late prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Though he was invited by the Prime Minister’s office on several occasions to take part in the Independence Day celebrations, he could not attend the same.  He finally made it in 2008 with the help from Home Minister Dr V S Acharya.

As soon as the news of his death spread, a number of leaders and citizens visited his home and paid tribute. His last rites were performed in the evening. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
