An actor, an entrepreneur and a fitness enthusiast, Shilpa Shetty Kundra wears many hats but the one she says that’s closest to her heart is that of a fitness fanatic. And that was amply evident from her well-sculpted physique as she made a flying visit to Bengaluru for the ‘Pride of Karnataka Awards’ organised by Round Table India and Ladies Circle India.

Shilpa launched her fitness yoga DVD a couple of years back and also co-owns a chain of spas and salon called Iosis. She was awarded for her contribution to the health and wellness industry.

The Manguluru girl made an ethnic style statement in a traditional Masaba Gupta outfit — an orange sari with a golden border — ornate temple jewellery and flowers in her hair, calling it an “ode to her South Indian roots”.

Between her fleeting visit, she took time off for a chit-chat with Anushree Agarwal about her connect with the South, her passion and why she values health above all.

How does it feel to be in Bengaluru?

It’s a great feeling to be here in this city, especially being recognised for something that I hold so close to my heart. I have my roots in Manguluru and South India will always be dear to me. I am proud to be a Shetty.

Fitness to you is...

Contrary to the notion that many hold, fitness is not about a certain shape or size. It has nothing to do with that. It’s about a sense of self-awareness and a commitment to staying healthy, not just for a few months but for a lifetime. For that, discipline is the most important thing. You have to have a fixed routine and dedicate time to exercising both your body and mind. For me, health is the topmost priority and am happy to see that more and more people are realising the need to become fit.

What do you want to say to women who are constantly obsessing over their looks and weight?

Follow a strict diet and exercise regularly but also allow yourself a cheat day when you can indulge in whatever you like. Also train yourself to have a positive outlook and stay happy because worrying constantly is not good for you.

Your thoughts on women’s safety...

It’s something we seem to have taken for granted. I was appalled to see the video of the molestation incident in Bengaluru. We need to inculcate respect for the opposite gender in our children right from their growing up years. That’s an important part of the solution.
