The Mangala Urban Livelihood Centre will provide a platform to sell the products manufactured by the economically under-privileged people.

They will be provided information on the training, job opportunities and other benefits available for them. Also, publicity will be given to the services provided by them, said Mayor Harinath. He was speaking after inaugurating the Mangala Urban Livelihood Centre at Urwa Market Community Hall on Monday. Financially underprivileged persons who want to carry out jobs such as plumbing, carpentry, masonry, laundry, catering and others may register themselves at the centre.

The centre has been providing assistance to those who want to carry out self employment, by utilising the Union government scheme. During the previous years, assistance has been provided by the Centre for 100 autorickshaw drivers and also for physically challenged persons.

Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Health, Education and Social Justice Standing Committee president Kavita Sanil said that the centre will be useful for the less educated who are eager to earn their livelihood.

Mangaluru City Corporation Leader of Opposition Roopa D Bangera said that the centre will help the needy towards advertising their home-made products and will also provide a platform to market them.

MCC community affairs officer Malini Rodrigues said the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana implemented by the Union Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ministry in 2004 has been renamed as Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihood Mission in 2014. Under the Social Mobility and Institutional Development, which is the sub-unit of the mission, it was decided to establish Urban Livelihood Centres in the areas having population of one lakh.

The community hall in Urwa Market was chosen to be the centre as the hall was built under Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana. The centre has been set up by the Poverty Alleviation Cell of MCC. The maintenance of the centre will be carried out by an urban federation comprising of 145 self help groups spread across the 60 wards of MCC. There are three main purposes of the centre: To provide guidance and support towards self employment for individuals or groups, social mobilisation and institution development and employment through skill training and placements.

Last year, 171 individuals and four self-help groups were provided support by the centre to carry out self employment and 1,060 persons were provided with skill training.
