Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar has said that the BJP would support state government in any move taken to continue the coastal region’s Kambala sport. Speaking during the valedictory of the Bhajana Mela held as part of Jagadguru Shivaratri Shivayogi Jathra Mahothsav at Suttur in Nanjangud taluk on Saturday, Shettar said ensuring the continuation of the traditional and ancient sport was everybody’s responsibility.

“The BJP will support the government if it promulgates an ordinance or enacts a new law to allow Kambala. The governments and  courts should take care not to hurt feelings of people. Even though we know that some of the superstitions are social evils they cannot be eradicated by law. They have to be gradually phased out by creating awareness among the people,” he said.

He said that the attempts of the government to bring an a law against superstitions will only give rise to corruption. The officials will use the law to fleece people. People should instead be convinced to think rationally, he said. Seer Devachaitanya Swami of Varkal Shivagiri Mutt of Kerala, Shivanandapuri Swami of KR Nagar branch of Kanakaguru Mutt and Savadatti MLA Anand C Mamani were present.
