In a shocking incident, a mother pushed her son into a tank and later and committed suicide in Anekal taluk on Saturday evening.

The victims, Champaka (35) and Ankush (13) are residents of Billapur village, Sarjapur hobli. Champaka also attempted to throw her younger son Vishwas (9) into the tank, but he survived the bid and escaped from the spot.  Ankush was a Class VIII student at a local school in Billapur. The reason for the incident is yet to be ascertained, said the police.

Champaka, who hailed from Gudnalli Madras, a village in Tamil Nadu near the Anekal border, was married to Ravindra Reddy for nearly 14 years. She told her husband that she would go to her parental house and left Billapur around 4 pm by bus. On the way, around 5 pm, she alighted from the bus and started walking towards the tank.

“My mother told me that she got down near the tank as there was a road which is the shortest route to our grandparents’ house. She stopped for a while and pushed my brother into the tank. I was shocked and looked at her. She also tried to grab and push me into the tank. However, I managed to escape and run away to safety. I saw a woman on the way and informed her,” Vishwas told DH.

The woman informed local residents who rushed to the spot, but there was no trace of the mother-son duo. The police and the Fire personnel conducted an operation and retrieved the bodies around 8 pm.

“Champaka’s parents have told the police that the couple were happily married and there were no differences. She did not leave behind any death note,” said a police official. The bodies have shifted to Anekal government hospital for post-mortem.
