Do you know how temperature is recorded in the city? If not, then visit the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional head office on Palace Road on Tuesday.

The IMD will be displaying its weather instruments on the occasion of World Meteorological Day and World Science Day, allowing public to have a look at how they measure and record weather readings.

Sundar M Metri, Director- in-charge, IMD, Bengaluru, told DH that they get many calls from people asking how the weather is recorded and how the temperature is measured. Some have even questioned the methodology. “We request everyone to come and see the process. The officials will explain the readings and the instruments used to observe weather. It is a good platform for people and officials to interact,’’ he said.

In 2016, more than 300 students and adults visited the IMD office. This time, the department is expecting bigger crowd as the temperatures are changing and the curiosity in people is also increasing. Instruments, poster presentations and demo models will help people understand the nuances of weather, Metri added.

Dip in temperature

The city on Monday recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius, which was two degree less than that on Sunday (33 degrees Celsius) and one degree less than the normal maximum of 32 degrees Celsius. This came as a good respite to Bengalureans who were reeling under the rising mercury level.

However, there was an increase in the minimum temperatures by one degree Celsius. The minimum temperature in the city on Monday was 19.1 degrees Celsius, against the normal of 18 degrees Celsius.

Metri explained that this drop in temperature was because of the change in wind flow pattern. “Earlier, the winds were blowing from northerly direction. But from Sunday, the wind is blowing from easterly direction. This has led to a slight dip in temperature. In some places, cloudy sky has also been reported, which has also contributed to a drop in temperature,” he said.
