Hungry and want to nibble on something tasty but not sure what to sink your teeth into? If you’re around Kalyan Nagar, think no further and head straight to ‘Cafe Nukkad’ in HRBR Layout, which is sure to bring a smile to your face.

The eatery, which specialises in sandwiches, offers a number of options for foodies.
Anitha M Eraiah, owner of the eatery, was an IT professional who quit her plush job to start this venture. “I wasn’t even sure if I was cut out for business but I knew that I wanted to explore my culinary skills. This is how the cafe started,” she says.

Anitha believes in choosing quality over quantity. “I did a small survey of this area and found out that no one ran any place which was dedicated to sandwiches.
As people are always in a hurry, this format seemed to work well —  there is no elaborate seating and one can just enjoy a sandwich on the go,” she says.

The hole-in-the-wall eatery has plenty of options for both vegetarians and meat lovers. Be it the ‘Chicken teriyaki sandwich’ or the ‘Veg Nukkar special sandwich’, there’s something for everyone.

The highlights of the place are the ‘Chicken sandwich’ and the ‘Paneer sandwich’ which are huge crowdpullers, says the owner.

“The meat used in our sandwiches is made into sausages which are dished out at home. And its always fresh,” she says.

Anitha adds that the local ‘Mint chutney sandwich’ made in ‘nukkad’ style also attracts customers, while the ‘Corn and cheese sandwich’ has a big fan base among the college-going crowd.

She adds, “We see a mixed crowd through the day. There are expatriates like the Koreans and the Persians who like their food bland. Mornings see college goers and people who are headed to work. Young professionals often stop by for a quick bite during the day and the evenings see senior citizens who like to have some ‘desi’ style sandwiches.”

Those who have a sweet tooth, the ‘Dark chocolate sandwich’, ‘White chocolate sandwich’, ‘Coffee, chocolate and peanut butter sandwich’ are sure to excite them.

“Once a customer visited us and wanted to have coffee and I didn’t have any to offer. I dished out the ‘Coffee flavoured sandwich’ then. This is when I realised that such mixing and matching can create delicious treats,” explains Anitha.

Most of the sandwiches make use of herbs like rosemary and basil, which make them healthy choices as well. “We guarantee fresh food and hygiene,” she vouches.

While nibbling on the sandwiches, one can add some ‘French fries’ or Potato wedges’ to make it a complete meal. You can wash it all down with flavoured squash juices in lemon, ‘litchi’ or orange flavours or some refreshing ‘Iced tea’.

‘Cafe Nukkad’ is located at 710, 7th Main, 4th B Cross, opposite Canara Bank, 1st Block, Kalyan Nagar and is open from 9 am to 9 pm.
The eatery is open from Monday to Saturday.
