The state government will amend the Karnataka Municipal Act, 1964, to bring all urban local bodies under single legislation.

Ravikumar B, an official in the District Urban Development Cell (DUDC), Bengaluru Urban, said that by deciding to amend the “outdated” Act, the government had accepted a key suggestion. Ten municipal corporations and 274 urban local bodies (ULBs) come under the Act. There is a need to amend it in view of the increasing population and introduction of new government schemes, he added.

“We want to modernise the Act and make it detailed. Changes may be created under various provisions such as property municipal taxation, municipal property and fund, improvement schemes and improvement boards, infrastructure among other segments,” Ravikumar said.

Besides, changes will be made to the Karnataka City Corporation Act, 1976, too. Computerisation of all citizen services and online approval of layout and building plans are other announcements.
