DVS objects to funds diversion by BBMP

Last Updated 30 March 2017, 20:32 IST
D V Sadananda Gowda, Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, has taken a strong exception to the BBMP diverting Central government funds for purposes other than they are meant for.

He even warned of legal recourse if the practice continues. In a statement issued on Friday, Gowda said the Centre released Rs 200 crore of 13th Finance Commission, which comprises Rs 50 crore for the remodelling of stormwater drain, Rs 30 crore for road and infrastructure projects. But the municipal corporation did not utilise the fund for the purpose and diverted it for some other purpose.

“Despite having many shortcomings, the BBMP could courageously table a budget with an outlay of Rs 9,241 crore. The Palike expects to receive at least 46% of the budget amount from the state and central grants. The Palike could garner only Rs 1,600 crore as property tax this year against the target of Rs 2,600 crore,” Gowda added.
