Traffic cops to instal 40 more digital boards

Last Updated 31 March 2017, 19:27 IST
Encouraged by the positive feedback on its first variable messaging system (VMS) on digital boards on the KIA elevated highway, the Bengaluru traffic police are considering installation of 40 such display panels across the city.

These digital boards display traffic density, pollution levels, journey time, alerts of road work and other information that could help motorists take alternative routes to reach their destination faster.

For example, if the motorist is coming from the airport and is going towards Mehkri Circle, the board will indicate whether there is traffic congestion near Mehkri Circle along with alternative routes with less traffic, so that the motorist can take a detour to reach his destination without much delay.

The traffic police recently installed one such electronic display board on a pilot basis at the up ramp of the KIA flyover near Kodigehalli on Ballari Road. R Hithendra, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) said that after a positive feedback, they have decided to install 40 more VMS display boards at various junctions.

“Work is on to float tenders to procure VMS display boards and suitable junctions are also being identified,” he said. Another senior police officer said that they are also working on a plan to display messages to alert motorists on the arrival of an ambulance or any other emergency vehicle.

“All these help commuters and in turn help ease traffic. Details of available parking space in the vicinity can also be displayed,” added the officer.
