IGP (Western Range) Harishekaran has assured stringent action would be taken against the accused in the attack against the DC and the AC in Kandlur by the sand mafia.

Speaking to media after a spot visit to the sand extraction places at Kandlur and also holding a review meet with the PWD and Mines and Geology department officials, the IGP said, “The officials play a major role in combating the sand mafia and should be supported by all other departments to prevent such incidents. The department is free to work and take action accordingly.”

He said proper coordination between all departments will help stop illegal sand mining, however, the Police Department alone cannot take the entire responsibility, when there is the equal responsibility for all other departments concerned.

He held a review meeting with his subordinates. On the allegations that innocent people are targeted, the IGP said that the Department is working impartially and knows the best way to catch offenders. “Action will also be taken for carrying out trade after expiry of licence. The police have indulged in intense action within 24 hours of crime. The court decides over the accused being innocent or guilty of crime.”

The IGP also said that the police will interfere only when the deputy commissioner informs about illegal sand trade and traffic. “The western zone will get the best-ever policing, the police would be strengthened and strategies would be planned accordingly. Special teams are made to track the theft cases especially the temple thefts. The root for narcotics transport will be traced out and action would be taken,” he assured.
