Four people were arrested by North Division police on charges of assaulting a domestic help accusing her of stealing a mobile phone at an old age home in Mahalakshmi Layout on Friday. The arrested have been identified as Venkatesh, Yuvaraj, Mehrun Pasha and Sharan, all aged between 19 and 25 years and employees of the centre, the police said.

According to the police, a mobile phone went missing from JMJ Old Age Home Trust near Ayyappa Temple in Mahalakshmi Layout on Thursday. The employees suspected a domestic help identified as Manjula (41) was behind the theft. Manjula is a resident of Goripalaya and had joined work at the old age home only 15 days ago and is also mentally challenged, the police said. There were only a few inmates at the old age home. The four male staffers had initially questioned Manjula and then started torturing her, burning her with cigarette butts to get information about the missing phone. A few neighbours who came to know about the incident, took her to the police station and lodged a complaint. "There are injury marks on her body and we are not sure about the nature of injuries. We sent her for medical examination on Friday and are awaiting the reports," said a senior police officer. Mahalakshmi Layout police are investigating.
