A group of Bengalureans has come forward to help animals and birds beat the summer heat by putting up 100 water bowls across the city.

The water bowls will be placed outside residences, on terraces and roadsides, in parks and public spaces frequented by animals and birds to help quench their thirst. The volunteers will also be distributing the water bowls at a nominal charge to people willing to be a part of their cause.

“We will be handing over the water bowls to our volunteers across the city who will place them in their homes, neighbourhoods and public places,” said Surendran Krishnan, founding member of Volunteer For a Cause, a community of volunteers in the city.

People can choose to buy or receive the water bowls and keep them outside their residences and in public spaces. If they are not able to keep a water bowl but would like to be a part of this cause, then they can donate a water bowl to someone who can instal it, added Krishnan who is organising the initiative in collaboration with a pet store.

Amarnath Ganesh, a software professional volunteering for the cause, said, “The water bowl distribution is part of our ‘Meet the Paws’ initiative whereby our volunteers visit animal shelters in the city to bathe and feed the animals. Water bowls made out of terracotta will help keep the water cold to give a soothing effect to the animals.”

People who get the water bowls will have to take a selfie after placing them to ensure they have been rightfully placed. “We are charging just Rs 80 per bowl to ensure the bowl is not misused.”
