Peenya police have arrested a 45-year-old supervisor for assaulting a pourakarmika and her fellow worker, besides abusing her  on the basis of caste.

Ranganath, the suspect, was booked for assault and under various sections of the SC/ST Atrocities Act. He was remanded in judicial custody. However, contractor Sunil G managed to escape from the spot and efforts are on to nab him, the police said.

In her complaint to the Peenya police, Anjanamma (35), a resident of Kalahasti Nagar, said she along with her fellow worker had asked Sunil and Ranganath to pay them their pending salaries of two months when the incident occurred.

Anjanamma said she was working as a pourakarmika for the past 20 years. None of the civic workers, including herself, had got salaries on time. She used to demand wages on behalf of all the workers regularly, which irked both the supervisor and the contractor, she said.

On Tuesday, when Anjanamma demanded her salary, Sunil not only abused her by referring to her caste, but also told Ranganath to sack her, Anjanamma said in her complaint.

Heated arguments turned physical when Anjanamma objected to his abuses and Ranganath assaulted her and her fellow worker who came to her rescue. The pourakarmika later lodged a police complaint.
