Poor turnout disappoint parties

Last Updated 28 March 2010, 19:05 IST

According to initial reports available at the State Election Commission the turnout was below 45 per cent. Upset by the voters’ low turnout to the elections, leaders of both the BJP and the Congress have voiced the need to make voting compulsory for all.

Chief Minister Yeddyurappa said that he was unhappy with the voters’. “I expected at least four-five per cent more than what is actually registered. It shows that political parties need to motivate the public to vote in large numbers”, he said.

KPCC president R V Deshpande  said he was disillusioned by the  response to the polls. The only solution would be making voting compulsory.

JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy is of the view that only poor people and slum dwellers voted. The educated voters’ have remained indoors.
