Rs 2 cr for setting up BU Central & BU North

Last Updated 27 April 2017, 20:14 IST

Bangalore University would provide an additional Rs 2 crore for the establishment of Bangalore University North and Bangalore University Central as the 53-year-old varsity is set to be trifurcated.

The state government did not make any specific allocation in the 2017-18 budget for the university’s trifurcation. Hence, funds for establishing the new universities would have to come from the parent varsity, officials said.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, K N Ninge Gowda, Registrar (Administration), BU, said Rs 1 crore was previously released for the trifurcation. In order to initiate the process of trifurcation and provide essential facilities for the new universities, the government had formed a committee under Prof S A Kori, Executive Director, Karnataka State Higher Education Council. The committee has recommended allocating Rs 100 crore for establishing Bangalore University Central and Rs 250 crore for Bangalore University North.

Meanwhile, BU’s Local Inspection Committees have begun visiting the 684 colleges for renewing their affiliation. Twenty-five teams comprising Syndicate members have been established for the purpose. The university has received 64 applications for new colleges.

BU will crack down on students who have submitted fake National Institute of Open Schooling certificates while enrolling for undergraduate or postgraduate courses at the university or affiliated colleges. The university will ask them to submit the documents afresh for verification.

B K Ravi, Professor and Co-ordinator, Department of Communication, BU, will replace Prof K N Ninge Gowda as the university’s registrar (administration).
