Power theft cases: 6 sent to jail, Rs 30 lakh fine imposed

The special courts of electricity in the city have sent six persons to jail and imposed penalities of over Rs 30 lakh on them in separate cases of power theft registered on complaints of private discom BSES.

The six individuals, including the owners of a tailoring shop and a construction firm, and two proclaimed offenders were sent to jail by the Special Courts of Electricity, Saket and Karkardooma. They have also been penalised with fine and civic liability totaling over Rs 30 lakh, a BSES spokesperson said.

A registered consumer, Khursheed Begum, whose premises at Abul Fazal Enclave was being used for running a mid-sized tailoring unit and other commercial activities, has been convicted by the Saket court.

A co-accused Rasheed died during course of the trial. She has been sentenced to 3 months rigorous imprisonment along with a penalty of Rs 11.3 lakh by the additional sessions judge of the court, the spokesperson said.

The Saket court also sentenced Rajesh Kumar and Kishor Kumar, proprietor of a construction firm near Pragati Maidan, with rigorous imprisonment of 3 months for power theft, he said.

A BSES inspection team had unearthed power theft to the tune of over 29 KW at the premises. The judge also imposed a penalty of Rs 13.3 lakh on them.

In Central Delhi, three persons were sent to jail for power theft, by the special electricity court, he said.
The accused included a 70-year-old resident of Katara Kirana, Tilak Bazar, who was sent to jail for 14 days. The court took lenient view of due to advanced age of the accused but penalised him with Rs 6.09 lakh, the spokesperson of BSES added.
