Senior Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav has given an ultimatum to his nephew and party president Akhilesh Yadav — step down from his post or face the prospect of a split.

As the family feud within the SP intensified, Shivpal told reporters in Etawah that he was giving Akhilesh three months to hand over the party reins to his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

“If Akhilesh fails to relinquish his post and hand over the party to Mulayam within this period, we will form a separate party,” Shivpal said.

According to Shivpal, Akhilesh had promised to hand over the party leadership to Mulayam once the Uttar Pradesh  Assembly poll results were declared. “It is my advice as well as my request to Akhilesh. Otherwise, the party will split,” he said.

Shivpal also launched a scathing attack on SP general secretary and Akhilesh confidante Ram Gopal Yadav and likened him to Shakuni in Mahabharata. “My advice to Shakuni is to read the Gita,” he said.
