Mysuru slips to 5th position, city stands at 210
Last Updated 04 May 2017, 20:18 IST

Indore in Madhya Pradesh is the cleanest city in India, while Gonda in Uttar Pradesh is the dirtiest, according to a survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Mysuru, which had bagged the first place in 2014 and 2016, has slipped to the fifth position, while Bengaluru has sunk to the 210th rank this year.

The ranks were announced by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who released the Swachh Survekshan 2017 (cleanliness survey) report on Thursday.

Bhopal, also in Madhya Pradesh, occupies the second spot among 434 cities and towns, while Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Surat in Gujarat are placed third and fourth, respectively.

On Mysuru slipping to the fifth position, Naidu said it did not mean cleanliness had declined there.
“Other cities have scored over Mysuru,” he remarked.

The survey covered 27 cities and towns in Karnataka, and Badami got the last position in the state. At the all-India level, it got the 388th rank.

Cities like Mangaluru, Udupi and Shivamogga got better ranks than Bengaluru. In the 2014 survey, Bengaluru had stood 7th. It slipped to the 38th position last year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi has soared up the cleanliness scale, occupying the 32nd position in Swachh Survekshan 2017, which is a part of the Modi government’s flagship Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission. It was ranked 65th last year and 418th in 2014.

Gujarat, with 12 cities in the top 50, has the best score among the states, and Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for half of the 50 dirtiest cities, is at the bottom of the list.
Madhya Pradesh, with 11 cities in the top 50, and Andhra Pradesh, with eight, follow Gujarat. West Bengal did not take part in the survey.
Tiruchirapally in Tamil Nadu is the sixth cleanest city, followed by the New Delhi Municipal Council area of the national capital. Bhusawal in Maharashtra is the dirtiest after Gonda, the survey stated.
The survey aims at capturing the outcomes of ongoing efforts to stop open defecation in urban areas and to improve the door-to-door collection, processing and disposal of municipal solid waste.
