A police sub-inspector slapped a 75-year-old man over a trivial issue in Chintamani on Thursday.

A person by name Shankar was flagged down by Krishnappa, a constable, who was on duty at Chelur Circle in the town, for jumping signal. A verbal duel ensued between the two and Krishnappa assaulted Shankar. Soon people gathered at the spot and staged a protest condemning the act.

Sub-inspector Narasimhamurthy, who came there entered into an argument with the public. Narayanappa, the father of Shankar, told the sub-inspector that penalty should have been levied on his son, rather than assaulting him. Narasimhamurthy, who got angry, slapped the aged man, said DySP, Krishnamurthy. He said that the SP had ordered a probe.
