Dry grass catches fire off Bellandur lake

Fire broke out near Bellandur lake in southeastern Bengaluru on Sunday.

Sources said the incident occurred around 6 pm, compelling the additional chief secretary (Urban Development Department) Mahendra Jain, the BBMP and the BDA officials to rush to the spot.

BBMP joint commissioner (solid waste management) Sarfaraz Khan said the fire broke out in the dry grass near the bank of the lake and not in the polluted water. “A huge quantity of dry grass had accumulated near the lake, which caught fire today. There was no garbage involved ,” he said.

A BDA officer said a similar fire was noticed in the  lake two days ago.
