Santosh Kumar started his career in Sandalwood with a small role in ‘Sirivantha’ directed by S Narayan. Later, he played a lead role in ‘Hogi Baa Magale’.

Following a training course in direction, he has now come up with his debut film ‘Students’ and also turned an independent producer under the banner Passion Movie Makers. The film is set to release in July and Santosh is said to have put in a lot of effort and thought into making it. In an interview with Tapan Menezes, Santosh talks about the film and his journey so far.

When did you discover your passion for cinema?

I started my career with a small role in ‘Sirivantha’. But I probably did not click as an actor even though many said I suited the role of a villain. My interest in the industry never faded and I went on to pursue a course in direction in Mumbai.

Was it easy to convince your parents to pursue what you wanted?

My parents expected me to take up one of the usual professions. But personally, my dream was to follow my passion. I’ve always wanted to make them understand that it’s better to allow their children to make their passion their profession.

What can the audience expect in ‘Students’?

I have tried to present a serious topic in a funny way. As we know, nowadays, college life is taken for granted by students. This movie has been made to make both students and parents aware of how important the time in college is.

What challenges did you face as a debutant director?

I’ve tried to do as much as possible on my own, right from the funding to the direction, and it has been quite a challenge. At times, I felt like giving up. But my goals and ambition pushed me to go on and make the movie.

What do you feel will make the movie stand out?

I searched every nook and corner of Karnataka for talented actors for this film. I chose to search in the rural parts to find the real, raw talent. I did not think of including any item number or other such attractions to gain popularity. It is the message in the film that counts.
