Chandigarh oust Karnataka

Hockey Chandigarh knocked Hockey Karnataka out of the 7th Sub-Junior National Hockey Championship with a 7-0 drubbing in the quarterfinal here on Thursday.

Karnataka were on the backfoot from the start as Jaspreet Singh opened the scoring in the 1st minute. Five minutes later, Sanjay added the second with Jasprit grabbing the third in the 13th minute.

There was a momentary lull but just before half-time, Chandigarh killed off the game with a fourth, coming from the stick of Arshdeep Singh.

Goals in the second half from Maninder Singh (59th), Amandeep (60th) and Sahibjeet Singh (70th) completed the rout and booked Chandigarh’s semifinal berth.

In another quarterfinal, Rimanshu (59th) struck late for Sports Authority of India in a tense 3-2 win over Hockey Haryana.

Ankush, with a brace (5th and 30th), was the other goalscorer for SAI, while Aryan Kadian (29th) and Sunny Malik (33rd) got onto the scoresheet for the losing side. 

In other quarterfinals, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy defeated Hockey Punjab and Hockey Odisha edged Uttar Pradesh Hockey via shoot-out.

Semifinal line-up: SAI vs MPHA, 7.30 am; Hockey Chandigarh vs Hockey Odisha, 4 pm. (Both matches on Saturday).
