The Permit Room’ on Magrath Road is an attempt at recreating South India’s unique vast culture. The place has got its grub right and shows how one can enjoy their ‘dosas’ while sipping on a cocktail.

The food at the restro pub is a modern take on South Indian fare. Spread over three floors, the place has a casual and relaxed ambience, which makes you feel right at home.

They have done their best to introduce people to the sheer variety of traditional South Indian cuisine. And the food, they claim, tastes just like that from grandma’s kitchen.

One can visit the place for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but they like to talk about their tiffin/ breakfast menu as it’s an age-old South Indian tradition to have a good filling breakfast before you start your day.

The menu mostly comprises convenient, Hors d’oeuvre (bite- sized) dishes in it too. Their signature ‘Iyengar bakery egg puff’ has been reinvented with a daring curry hollandaise that goes on top. It is a unique, appetising dish. The crispy ‘Nizami haleem samosa’, filled with soft and succulent lamb in caramelised onion, is a pleasant treat to the taste buds.

However, it’s the ‘Kerala beef fry’ that takes the cake. Served on soft flaky coin ‘parotas’, this beef fry will remind you of your ‘ammachi’s’ kitchen in the first bite.

Head chef Kavan Kuttappa says that he enjoys the excitement he experiences each time while creating a new dish. Recreating the ‘Malgudi Days’ appeal, the ‘thalis’ here represent the seasonal harvest celebrations of the South.

They have a perfect balance of all flavours — the different sweet and spicy dishes on the ‘thalis’ go hand in hand to aid the process of digestion.

Another one of their unique experimentations is the military hotel style lamb-based ‘Donne biryani’, served with crispy burnt onion and garlic curd along with fryums, making it a complete meal in itself.

The eatery is also known for their quirky and satisfying cocktails that include rasam, kokum and many other unusual ingredients.

‘The Permit Room’ has also taken the liberty to pack the ‘Mysore Pak’, also known as the ‘royal sweet’, into cute filo pastry cubes and bake it. Though the sweet in itself is extremely sweet, the addition of a kiwi salad with each bite balances the flavour.

The chef says that they are planning to roll out a few more surprises soon. All in all, the place is certainly worth a visit, even if you’re not a big foodie.

It is located at 16/3, Ram Kunj, opposite Garuda Mall, Magrath Road, Ashok Nagar. For details, call 90191 13388
