Medicos protest attack by patient's relative

Last Updated 02 June 2017, 19:35 IST

Following an attack on Dr Ramesh Patil, a postgraduate medical student by the relatives of a patient in the Neuroscience department of the Victoria Hospital, doctors and students at the Bangalore Medical College staged a protest here on Friday.

The protesters, led by the Lecturers’ Association of the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, demanded protection for doctors.

Association secretary Dr N Ravi said that on May 28, a person called Suhas had brought his father to the hospital. “Suhas picked a fight with a nurse and then attacked Dr Ramesh, a second year postgraduate student. Such attacks terrorise doctors and medical students,” he said.

Another protester, Dr Poornima said, “Thousands of patients come to the hospital every day and the medical students interact with them patiently. However, some relatives and patients pick up fights.”

The doctors also condemned the government’s decision of replacing a police station with an police outpost on the hospital. The police have arrested Suhas (28). “Suhas told us that he visited the hospital to get his father treated, but felt that they were being ignored by the doctor and attacked the latter in a fit of rage,” the police said.
