The Centre has approved a proposal to progressively hike the tuition fee of the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) by 10% every year till 2019, starting from the academic session of 2017-18.

The decision to hike the fee of these seven premier science and research institutes was taken at a recent meeting of the Council of the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER).
Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar presided over the meeting.

With the 10% increase, the revised fee for the BS-MS (Bachelor and Master in Science) dual degree programme of the IISERs will be Rs 27,500 per semester from 2017-18.

Students taking admissions to this programme in 2018-19 will have to pay Rs 30,300 per semester. Rs 33,400 will be the tuition fee per semester for those to be admitted to the dual degree programmes in 2019-20.

“The fee hike would be applicable to prospective students to be taking admission every year. This means the hike in the tuition fee in 2018-19 will be applicable to only those getting admission in 2018-19. It will not be applicable to students of 2017-18 batch,” official sources told DH.

Under the revised fee structure, IISERs will collect Rs 16,500 as tuition fee per semester from the students to be taking admission to their integrated PhD programmes in 2017-18. Students getting admission to this programme in 2018-19 will have to pay Rs 18,200 tuition fee per semester. The revised tuition fee for the integrated PhD programme will be Rs 20,000 per semester from the academic session of 2019-20.

Students getting enrolled to PhD programmes in 2017-18 will have to pay Rs 16,500 per semester while those getting admission to the programme in 2018-19 will have to pay Rs 18,200 per semester. Students of 2019-10 batch would be charged Rs 20,000 per semester for pursuing PhD at IISERs.

The integrated PhD programme of the IISERs are different from the conventional PhD programmes as the integrated course combines curricula for masters and doctorate degrees into a single integrated programme with a blend of course work and research projects. The tuition fee for both integrated PhD and convention PhD programme was Rs 15,000 per semester in 2016-17.

The IISERs hiked their tuition fee by about 79% last year with the approval of the government last year. The tuition fee for BS-MS programmes was increased to Rs 25,000 per semester from Rs 11,000.
