UP rivers in spate

Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh continued to rise following rains threatening low-lying areas in several districts in the state and forcing people to shift to safer places.
 
According to the official sources here, Ganga river has been rising at Varanasi at the rate of two centimetres per hour. The water level of Ganga has risen by over two feet in the past two days, sources said.
 
Other major rivers, including, Ghaghra, Saryu and Sharda, were also rising along with their course. At many places, the overflowing rivers have inundated large tracts of land.
 
The situation in Faizabad, Barabanki, Baharaich, Lakhimpur-Kheri, Gonda and some others was grim, the sources said adding that people residing in the low-lying areas had started shifting to safer places.
