Despite, rubbing the sitting MLAs on the wrong side, a few managed to win, contesting as independents while others enforced their charisma in their old pockets and made it.
Mohammed Ali alias Diwan Ali played his minority card to its best and won the elections with a comfortable margin from (Ward no 180) Banshankari temple on a  JD(S) ticket.
A CCB police officer who recalled: "Sitting inside the jail, he kept a close watch on the BBMP polls and when the matter was in the court he intelligently managed to come out on parole, confirmed his ticket and went back to jail. Finally, he moved his bail application, weeks before the elections, contested the polls and won."

‘False cases’
Minutes after meeting former chief minister H D Kumarswamy, Deccan Herald caught up with Diwan Ali. “If I am a ‘bad’ man, why did the people choose me. They elected me with a thumping majority. Many politicians are jealous of my popularity and probably they pressurised the police who in turn charged false cases against me.”
Kumaranna was happy and “he advised me to continue the good work and not to get involved in any mess. I am a social worker and from the time I came out of the jail, a team of policemen are with me round the clock. They are witness to how I won this election,” said Diwan Ali.

Meanwhile, Ishtiyaq Ahmed alias Ishtiyaq Pilvan and Chakravarthy alias Sakre’s wife also won the polls. Ishtiyaq commented on his wife’s victory: "Enough of shouting at the top of their voices, tarnishing the image and branding me as 'rowdy sheeter'. Now, the same people have voted and elected my wife (Fareeda) as the corporator of Shivajinagar ward no 92. Stop looking at us with evil eyes, we are social workers and it is for our 'good' work that we have been noticed and we are picked up by the people.”

“It is their trust and their blessings my wife has been voted to power,” Ishtiyaq added.
He added, “If someone raises his voice and gets the work done, they are branded as rowdies which continues for rest of their lives and automatically goes into the rowdy sheeter. Now, I will work for the betterment of the people, let me see whether they will 'delete' my name from the rowdy sheeter list.”

Interestingly the wives of two rowdies were pitted against each other in ward no 96 Okalipuram ---  Chakravarthy alias Sakre's wife Queen Elizabeth who contested on a Congress ticket while Nagaraja alias Bomb Naga's wife Pushpalatha as independent. However, Sakre's wife won hands down with 9,963 votes.

Sakre told Deccan Herald: “Yes, it was an accident and  I happened to enter that mad world, I have regretted enough and now, I begged for a chance to come out clean. Thanks to the Congress party for recognising my work. People from my area know my worth and selected my wife. I will continue to do the good work. For the last 15 years, I have not got into any unwanted work and will continue to remain a clean man.”
When asked about Bomb Naga, Sakre said: "He is still a 'kid' and there was no problem at all. It was a cake walk. We will work hard and retain the seat in the coming elections also.”

However, Bomb Naga who contested from Ward no 98 Prakash Nagar lost the battle.
On the other hand, not all candidates with criminal background had a good time. A host of them had to be content with just double digits, where only their associates voted for them.
