DVS to guv: Direct govt to drop its move on dry lakes

Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation D V Sadananda Gowda on Wednesday urged Governor Vajubhai Vala to direct the state government to drop its proposal to give up control and ownership of parts of lakes that have dried up and lost their original features.

In a letter to Governor, Gowda, the MP from Bangalore North, said it is the duty of the government to rejuvenate all water bodies when the state is reeling under severe drought. Instead, the government is planning to give up its control and ownership of 1,500 lakes that have become dry. The proposal is suicidal. “I, therefore, request your good self to prevail upon the state government to restrain themselves from taking such wrong step and also creating a dangerous precedence (sic),” he stated.

The Union Minister has also written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting him to drop the proposal.
