Catch the sparkle of the season

The charm of a Diamond never fades and it is still a girl's best friend, says Bindu Gopal Rao, who tells us what's trending in the world of diamonds.

Diamonds have an image of purity and light. They are given as a pledge of love and worn as a symbol of commitment,” writes Peter Singer, Australian philosopher.

Reflect on Singer’s words and you will realise that these words have probably never been more relevant than today. With notions of jewellery changing to become more event based, diamonds are a natural choice to commemorate an important occasion.

And while diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, today a girl is self-reliant enough to buy them for herself.

These days the focus is on ethically sourced diamonds and diamonds that have a story to tell. Diamonds have increasingly becoming a key design inspiration for designers and fashionistas the world over. Ace fashion designers Bibhu Mohapatra and Sabyasachi Mukherjee have also recently launched jewellery collections.

What’s trending?
Diamonds are becoming a mode of self-expression for women, and young consumers in India are interested in jewellery that can be a part of their everyday life. The designs are becoming much more wearable. Moreover, working women need adaptable jewellery. So an earring can be a simple stud in the morning and drop down to become a dangler or chandelier earrings for the evening.

Jewellery that is intensely personal, and understood only by its wearer will also be a key trend in this year. “Fancy diamond shapes — princess, marquise and pear denote a particular personal sentiment in a line of diamond charms on a bracelet; layers of stackable diamond rings lovingly collected over time and worn together tell a story or display a unique taste,” says Federica Imperiali, Forevermark’s trend expert and head of new product development in Milan.

The key aspect of jewellery today, is the fact that diamonds are moving away from the vaults and finding place in cupboards. “We are still deeply rooted in our traditions and the mangalsutra for instance is seeing a revival with diamonds.

Likewise, our Capricci nose pin collection with seven interchangeable jackets is a reflection of this sentiment,” says Sachin Jain, president Forevermark India.

If you are looking to make a commitment to a loved one, choose diamonds to seal the deal! You can never go wrong with designs inspired by nature like birds, butterflies, flowers, the sun, moon and more — studded with diamonds. As far as autumn-winter trends are concerned, a fusion of influences ranging from stylised motifs of diverse crafts, decorative textiles, repetitive prints and abstract ceramic markings seem to be the way to go.

Ashwini Oza, design head of Arnav says, “Polki and rose cut diamonds set in heritage styles are popular among brides this season. Diamond chokers, cocktail rings and trendy oversized earrings are popular as statement pieces.” So are you ready to make the cut? Well, sparkle on — the diamond way!
