NAAC introduces revised accreditation framework

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which assesses and accredits institutions of higher education in India, has launched a revised accreditation framework after several months of consultation.

In April, the council had suspended applications from colleges for accreditation as it was working on laying a new framework. The revised accreditation framework is more information and communication technology (ICT) intensive and is said to be more objective.

A Student Satisfaction Survey has also been introduced in the accreditation process. This is an attempt to include students, who are the main stakeholders, in the process. NAAC will consider responses from 10% of the total enrolled students, and the result of the survey will be a part of the overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) awarded to the institution. The entire process has been simplified. The number of questions to the institution, the size of the report and the number of visit days have been reduced.

The new framework was formed after several rounds of interactions, a national workshop and meetings of several working groups. The framework was also tested on a few higher education institutions across the country.

Till July 2017, NAAC has undertaken the accreditation exercise for 11,132 institutions, including 518 universities and 10,614 colleges in the country.
