I'm lucky, that I am not lying raped and murdered in a ditch somewhere: Varnika

The Varnika Kundu stalking case has finally started to move in the right direction with the arrest of Vikas Barala, the VIP accused son of Haryana BJP chief. The case underlines the rot that exists and the need for the system to deliver.

Varnika could have kept quite, but preferred the hard choice to take on the might of these influential people. The 28-year old brave girl, a DJ, spoke to Deccan Hearld special correspondent Gautam Dheer as events unfolded in the last few days.

Q. Things have now started to move. How do you see then shaping up?
Its a positive development. Its not me against him anymore. Its now all the women against all the Vikas Barala’s of the country. The case has to be taken to a logical conclusion.
 
Q. You were petrified that night. What came to your mind being chased and stopped by goons?
As I said earlier, I'm also lucky because I'm not lying raped and murdered in a ditch somewhere. It was a full-blown panic attack. My hands were shaking.

Q. You chose to stand up against a wrong. You had the wherewithal. What about the other girls who face similar predicament?
It must be very difficult for them. But they will get justice. I have the resources and influence to fight an influence. But that is not the way it should be. Every women should stand up to protest such crime.

Q. How do you react to people who questioned 'where and why you were there that late in the night'?
I am not answerable to these people. See, its unsafe for girls at night because of people like this. It will be safe if not for these men out on streets.

Q What would you expect as punishment for the two accused ?
The punishment should send a message to all that they cannot scare anybody and get anything. In fact, the punishment be such that they should be scared that they will not be spared of they do such a thing.

Q. When did you realize who these people were?
I had no idea who they were when they were chasing me. Its only at the police station that we got to know who they were.

Q. There have been attempts to mislead the investigation, perhaps, owing to political pressure. What do you have to say to this?
After the arrest of the two, I feel somewhat releaved. But its just the beginning.
