A class 7 student was “brutally” caned by the headmaster of a private unaided school at Harugeri town in Raibag taluk of the district just because he didn’t wear uniform.

Prajwal Suresh Bomnal was left with swollen fingers after the headmaster, P A Patil, caned him along with several other students on Wednesday for not wearing uniform despite several reminders.

The incident prompted the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to issue a “stern” warning to the management of Bharatiya Unaided Private School. Bomnal didn’t complain of pain immediately. But as the day progressed, his fingers began to swell. The school got him treated and sent him home.

Rajendra Terdal, BEO, Raibag, visited the school on Thursday and warned to derecognise the school if the incident recurred.

Patil insisted that it was the second straight year that Bomnal was not wearing uniform. He said the student’s action had a negative impact on other pupils.

He suggested that Bomnal was not caned intentionally. The student folded his hands as his turn to be caned came. He ended up with injuries on his fingers. T

he student’s mother, Vijayshree Bomnal, said her son was attending school without uniform as the tailor failed to make the clothes on time. She said her son was running a fever following the incident.
