He was speaking at the inauguration of the 16-day refresher course in experimental physics at Mangalore University.

Departments of Physics and Materials Science of Mangalore University in association with Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, Delhi and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, organised the course.

He said that “in spite of the advancements made in the area of electronics, the physics experiments are conducted using the equipment that were used 50 years ago. The advancements made in electronics has resulted in the availability of electronic components of high quality at a very low price. Therefore, equipment for good measurements can be developed at low price”.

The refresher course aims at demonstrating that good experiments can be developed at a very low budget through the low cost kits developed by Professor Srinivasan with the support of the three academies and he is the course director.

Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa expressed concern over the diversion of present generation from science stream to more lucrative courses.

Material Science department Chairman Prof Manjunatha Pattabi welcomed the gathering. Prof K M Balakrishna, Chairman of Physics department, proposed a vote of thanks.
