Rajasthan govt accords OBC status to Jats in Bharatpur, Dholpur

Last Updated 23 August 2017, 19:09 IST

After threats of agitation by Jats in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur and Dholpur districts, the state government on Wednesday accorded them reservation under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category.

A notification from the state government said Jats of the two districts will be immediately incorporated into the authorized OBC category list following a cabinet decision.

The community had vowed a massive stir if the state government were to back off from the promise of including them in the reserved category.

“It’s a collective win,” Jat leader and Congress’ Bharatpur MLA Vishvendra Sing told Deccan Herald. “We are happy that the state government acted on our demand. Now, communities in other states (in a similar tussle with their governments) can follow our example.”

In June, the OBC commission had submitted its report to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Following that, the Jats in Rajasthan have been given the benefits under the OBC reservation, except for the community members in Bharatpur and Dholpur.
