A youth had chopped off one of the hands of the minor allegedly after she had spurned his advances in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 150 kilometres from here, on Wednesday.

The culprit, identified as Rohit Kumar Chaurasia had barged into the house of the victim, a resident of Fattepur Saidhari locality, on Wednesday afternoon and dragged her to the nearby Mahewaganj Road. The girl's mother, who was blind in both eyes, tried to prevent Rohit from taking away her daughter but she was kicked away.

Rohit, who carried a sword, repeatedly hit the minor girl with it severing one of her hands even as a large number of passers by remained mute spectators, according to the eye witness accounts. Recounting the horror one of the eye witnesses said that Rohit continued to hit the girl with a sword even after one of the hands got severed.

The minor had sustained serious injuries on her other hand, back and face also. She was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to the Trauma Centre at the KG Medical College in the state capital in a critical condition.

Rohit, who tried to flee from the spot after perpetrating the crime, was caught by the people. He was thrashed by the crowd before being handed over to the police.

Police sources the victim's family said that Rohit used to sit for hours at a hotel, which was situated very close to her house, also used to stalk the girl. Police said that National Security Act (NSA) would be slapped on Rohit.
