A sub-inspector attached to the Devarajeevanahalli police station sustained head injuries while trying to arrest a gang of armed rowdies engaged in a brawl on Shampura Main Road on Thursday evening.

The sub-inspector, Nayaz Ahmed, received information about a clash between gang members of two rowdies Nadeem and his rival Umar. Nayaz, who was in plain clothes, rushed to the spot unarmed. As the gang began to flee, Ahmed chased and caught one of the rowdies.

Nadeem then attacked Nayaz with a sharp-edged weapon on his head. Nayaz lost consciousness while Nadeem and his associates fled. The sub-inspector was rushed to a private hospital, where he is said to be out of danger.

In October 2015, 34-year-old Jagadish, sub-inspector of Nelamangala town police station, was stabbed to death when he tried to catch two vehicle thieves.

There are standing orders for senior police personnel to carry service weapons while on duty. Additional Commissioner of Police (East Zone) Seemanth Kumar Singh said a special team has been formed to track down the suspects.
