Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto derails in Thane district

Last Updated 29 August 2017, 19:32 IST

The locomotive and nine coaches of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed between Asangaon and Vashind stations in Maharashtra, nearly 90 km from downtown Mumbai.

While the railways did not confirm any injuries, passengers said they suffered minor wounds.

A landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, had breached the tracks, which led to the derailment.

As a result of the derailment, the local suburban train services between Kalyan and Kasara went haywire.  The full restoration of the line would be possible only by Wednesday morning. Some long-distance trains, going in and out of Mumbai, reported delays.

The driver of the locomotive and the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches prevented any further damage from taking place.

“The driver of the train, Virendra Singh, showed an extreme level of alertness,” Central Railway (CR) general manager D K Sharma said after inspecting the site.
