85-year-old Churai Yadav and 75-year-old Phoolmati, both residents of Sauran village in Lucknow district, got married with much fanfare a few days back in the presence of a large number of people including their grand sons and grand daughters.

While the relatives and kin danced to the tune of popular Bollywood numbers played by the band, a large number of curious onlookers were also there to witness the two old people getting married.

Though Churai could barely walk, the couple tied the nupital knot strictly in accordance with the Hindu religion.

In spite of being weak, Churai could not stop himself and he also danced with the ‘baratis’ much to the surprise of the people. The feeling of happiness was writ large on their faces after the marriage cermony was complete. “I have been wanting this for the past 40 years,” Churai said after the marriage.

According to the villagers, Phoolmati was married to one Malik Deen, who was a history sheeter, about 55 years back. Irked over her husband’s conduct, Phoolmati left her husband’s home and setlled at a relative’s house in Sauran village. Churai came into contact with Phoolmati about 40 years back when his wife died. Since then they began to like each other but did not disclose it to others. The marriage was solemnised only when the sons and daughters of Churai and the only son of Phoolmati from her first husband, gave their consent.

The village pradhan of Sauran, Dinesh Singh, who was also present at the marriage ceremony, said that the entire village was happy at the marriage of the old lovers.
