Scholarship for degree students in 39 backward taluks on cards

The proposal comes in pursuance of recommendations of the State Knowledge Commission. Students of 60 government colleges in the State stand to benefit from the scheme likely to launched this academic year.

The eligible students will be paid Rs 4,000 at the time of admission to the college and the balance of Rs 6,000 will be disbursed in ten monthly installments, disclosed Minister for Higher Education, Aravind Limbavali. He was speaking after taking part in a review meeting with officials of the Education Department here on Wednesday.

The minister said that colleges with a strength of more than 50 students can open an additional section and classes can be conducted in morning and afternoon sessions in case of colleges facing shortage of classrooms. Steps are being taken to acquire land for 70  pre-university colleges across the State. Karnataka Housing Board and RITES have been awarded the contract for construction of college buildings. At least 80 per cent of the work on construction of Ramanagara and Hassan Engineering colleges has been completed while the work at many other places is still in progress, the minister revealed. He attributed the delay in completion to enforcement of model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections.

Limbavali said that the newly appointed lecturers will be posted to ‘C’ category colleges and those serving in such colleges will be shifted to ‘A’ and ‘B’ category colleges and the exercise entails reshuffling of approximately 1,000 lecturers.

The meeting deliberated on the issues pertaining to  buildings for PU colleges, polytechnic and engineering colleges in the backward regions.
