Former UAE minister, Indian gets one-year suspended jail term

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 02:10 IST

The Dubai Cassation Court earlier sentenced former minister Khalifa Bakhit Al-Falasi and the other persons, B M Raman, an Indian finance manager and Samir Helmi, an American general manager, to two years in jail on charges of deceiving Maysoon Fahmy Jamal and taking over her late brother's stake in a technology firm.

However, in May, an appeal court acquitted them and threw out that sentence. Yesterday's decision reversed that ruling.
The court has said the two managers of the technology company would be deported after serving their sentences.

"The court has sentenced the suspects to one year in jail, but the imprisonment will be suspended for three years starting today. Raman and Helmi will be deported," Judge Mohammad Nabeel Riyad was quoted as saying by the 'Gulf News'.
The ruling is considered final, unless new evidence emerges.
