Census to begin on April 15

Mangalore city has been divided into 868 blocks

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner who is also the Mangalore City Principal Census Officer Dr K N Vijayprakash said the city has been divided into 868 blocks which will have equal number of enumerators, 11 charge officers and 146 supervisors. He said that for every two to three wards, there will be a Nodal officer. The enumerators have already been given training by 19 master trainers.

He said the service of Self-Help Groups will be taken for giving publicity on census to the general public. Posters, banners, pamphlets will be distributed to create an awareness among people on the need to give accurate information during the census.

Dr Vijayprakash said the census will be inaugurated from the house of the first citizen of Mangalore Rajani Dugganna. He also urged the people to co-operate with the officials when they visit the houses by providing proper information as census also includes collecting information for the National Population Registry.  He said “every enumerator will get 150 to 200 houses. They have 45 days time to complete the work. In case, if the house is locked, then the enumerator will visit again. The authorities have also asked the enumerator to visit the houses in the early morning or in the evening hours.”

A separate press release from DC V Ponnuraj said that Deputy Commissioners of all districts will function as the Chief Census Officers, while Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers will be designated as Additional District Census Officers. Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioners will be designated as District Census Officers and District Statistics Officer will be given the responsibility of Additional District Census Officer. Chiefs of Town Municipalities, Corporations and Taluks will be the In-charge Officers.

About 2,543 enumerators will be deployed for census work in the district. In the first phase of the census which will commence from April 15 to May 31, schedule of house listing and preparation of constituency map along with National Population Registrar will be undertaken. In the second phase, the actual census will begin. The listing of houses will help to get details on the social status of the people, the release informed.
