DSS protests for basic facilities for slum dwellers

Last Updated 16 October 2017, 20:04 IST
Members of the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samithi staged a protest against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday, urging the civic body to provide proper infrastructure to slum dwellers.

The members of the association said that there are around 2,000 slums in Bengaluru but even basic infrastructure is not provided. “The state and the Union governments talk about Swachh Bharath programme and other activities. But this has only been on paper. This is not being implemented,” said Siddapura Manjunath, district chief secretary.

“We do not have basic facilities, no proper toilets. All we are asking for are basic facilities. It is disturbing to know about the wall collapse and rain-related deaths in the city. Our situation is no different,” echoed the members. Around 60 people had gathered at the BBMP headquarters for the protest.

Mayor’s assurance

The protest was called off after Mayor R Sampath Raj addressed them and assured them that all their problems will be resolved in a day or two by calling a meeting.
