HC directs Tamil Nadu to pay Rs 10 lakh each to families of electrocuted kids

The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu government to give Rs 10 lakh each to the families of two girls, electrocuted at Kodungaiyur in the city on Wednesday.

The order came a day after the court demanded a report from the state authorities in connection with the rain relief measures.

Victims Bhavana and Yuvashri, who hailed from a poor family and studied at a government school, died on the spot when they came into contact with a live electric wire that was submerged under rainwater.

When the petition came up for hearing, Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, ordered the government to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the victims within one week.

The state told the court that electricity department had already awarded Rs 2 lakh each to the families victims. Besides, the chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had also announced Rs 3 lakh as solatium to the victim's family.
