Declaring that distortion of history could not be permitted, some Hindu seers have lent their support to the demand for a ban on Padmavati and the registration of a sedition case.
The seers said the producer, director and actors of the film must be prosecuted for sedition.
"We cannot allow distortion of history in the name of freedom of speech and expression," said prominent Hindu seer and All India Akhara Parishad (AIAP) president Mahant Narendra Giri on Friday.
"Those who have made the film should be charged with sedition and be put behind the bar," he said.
Giri justified the ongoing protests in some parts of the country against the movie saying no one should be allowed to the hurt the sentiments of any community.
Meanwhile, protests against the film continued in different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
A group of protesters staged a demonstration before a cinema hall in Hapur town, about 400 km from here, warning the owners not to screen the movie if and when it is released.
The Uttar Pradesh government has already written to the Information and Broadcasting and Home ministries seeking deferment of the release of the film, saying its release could trigger law and order problems in the state.
Former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, however, refused to join the row saying that he has no idea about the content of the movie.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had on Thursday justified the protests and said that history should not be distorted in films.
