Mahadayi agitators threaten self-immolation

Members of Raitha Sena Karnataka, and other organisations staged a protest here on Wednesday, demanding immediate solution for inter-state dispute over diverting water from Mahadayi basin to Malaprabha river, compensation for farmers who died and injured in agitation, withdrawal of cases booked against farmers, minimum support price for crops and other measures for farmers' welfare.

After taking out a rally, farmers' leaders staged a protest in front of Mini Vidhan Soudha. Submitting a memorandum to the prime minister through the tahsildar, Raitha Sena Karnataka members threatened that they would consume poison in front of BJP office and houses of the party leaders, if State BJP President B S Yeddyurappa's assurance to resolve Kalasa-Banduri dispute by December 15 is not fulfilled.

In the memorandum submitted to the chief minister, they demanded to take an all-party delegation to meet the prime minister to seek immediate solution for Mahadayi dispute, compensation for those who died in agitation and injured in lathi charge, withdrawal of cases booked against farmers, announcing minimum support price for crops and opening procurement centres, payment of pending amount under the PMFBY, and other measures.

Later, they also staged a protest in front of the HDFC Bank branch, charging that the banks are harassing farmers while sanctioning loans.

Veeresh Sobaradmath, Shankar Ambali, Guru Rayanagoudra, Mallanna Alekar, Ayyappa Shirkol, and others led the protest.
