RPF security for all night trains

Last Updated 20 April 2010, 17:05 IST

According to a top RPF source, in the interest of passenger safety, all trains running after 10 pm on the Bangalore-Jolarpet section and Bangalore-Dharmavaram section are being provided security for an indefinite period. Nearly 25 pairs of trains run during those timings.

“In the case of a few trains, where there is a shortage of RPF personnel, then the Government Railway Police (GRP) are taking care of security work,” he said. The security apparatus has been in place since April 16, he added.

A day earlier, three separate cases of thefts were reported by passengers on the Chennai-Bangalore Mail. Some persons who boarded the train at Chennai, had robbed three sleeping passengers in different compartments of valuables worth Rs three lakh.

“The robbers got down at Bangarpet,” he recalled, adding the incident was not publicised by the RPF in order to prevent panic among train passengers.

In the previous major robbery that took place at Vardapura station (between Kuppam and Mallanur), a robber gang had played havoc with the signalling system provided en route to the station so that the green light turned to red. “After the train halted abruptly, the gang broke glass window panes from outside and snatched chains and other valuables worth Rs two lakh from passengers sleeping near the window,” the source added.

In the light of the blasts at Chinnaswamy stadium recently, the RPF has provided the City police with footage recorded on April 17 from 40 surveillance cameras positioned at the City station. “The local police wanted to check out faces of all individuals to identify suspects,” the source said.
