Many rooftop pubs flouting fire safety norms

Last Updated 30 December 2017, 19:35 IST

A dozen rooftop pubs and bars in upscale Indiranagar and Koramangala received fire safety notices on Saturday.

They have 15 days to implement safety measures, M N Reddi, director general of police (fire), tweeted. They will be closed if they don't comply, he warned. The action comes a day after 14 guests died in a fire that engulfed a rooftop pub at Kamala Mills in Mumbai.

Reddi ordered his officials on Saturday to inspect all high-rises where restaurants, pubs and bars are doing business.

They went about checking watering holes in Indiranagar and Koramangala, where large crowds are expected to gather on Sunday to usher in the new year. Many places were found wanting when it came to safety measures.

The officials also spoke to building owners, counselling them about the consequences of rooftop pubs and bars not following fire safety norms.

Officials said a majority of pubs, bars and restaurants in high-rises in the M G Road area followed fire safety norms, but the same couldn't be said of high rises in Indiranagar and Koramangala.

The fire audit will continue in the coming days at high-rises and places with high footfalls, Reddi tweeted late on Saturday.

"We have to cover the maximum possible high-rises in the city before New Year's eve to ensure safe celebrations. Our men will complete the job by Sunday morning," said Soumendu Mukherjee, IGP and additional director, fire and emergency services.
