The Kavoor police have arrested three people in connection with the assault on PU students near Kinnigoli on Tuesday. The students had been to the Manasa Amusement and Water Park in Pilikula on the outskirts of Mangaluru on Tuesday afternoon, where they were assaulted by men claiming to be Hindu activists.

According to DCP (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya, the police arrested Sampath Shetty, Varada and Dinesh following a complaint by one of the victims.

According to the police, the activists assaulted the students after they learnt that two girls from different communities were with boys from another community in Pilikula.

The city police rushed to the spot and rescued the victims. A video of a youth questioning the girl and later beating her from behind in the presence of police personnel who were accompanying them while coming out from the amusement park, has gone viral.

Samapth Shetty has been giving contradictory statements about him belonging to Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jagarana Vedike. The investigation is in progress, said city police commissioner T R Suresh.

Sources said Sampath Shetty is a histroy-sheeter in Kavoor police station.

The police have registered cases under IPC Section 341, 342, 324, 506, 509, 355, 153 (A) and 74 (1) of JJ Act.
